About Dawson County

Our community’s access to metro Atlanta and other business and population centers make it one of the fastest growing communities per capita in the nation. Cradled by the foothills of the North Georgia Mountains, our area is home to the start of the Appalachian Trail, Lake Lanier, Amicalola Falls, exciting shopping opportunities, and so much more. Additionally, the benefits of Atlanta and its many bustling activities are accessible with a short drive south on Georgia Highway 400.

Dawson County has progressive services and facilities, economic prosperity, top-notch amenities, and the ambience of small-town friendliness and charm.

Dawsonville itself bustles with the business activity on the Georgia Highway 400 corridor, but also enjoys its porch swings and neighborly ways, surrounded by the breathtaking natural beauty of the southern Appalachian Mountains. The historic town square, home to Georgia’s oldest working courthouse, the historic jail, and other original period architecture stands as a reminder of Dawson County’s frontier-era past.

Dawsonville is home to one of the most unique City Hall structures in Georgia. In addition to the activities of city government, the Dawsonville Municipal Complex houses the Georgia Racing Hall of Fame and the Dawsonville Moonshine Distillery, the first legal moonshine distillery in the state. The Hall of Fame tells the intriguing story of the moonshine era and the backwoods racing that evolved into modern automobile racing and stories of hometown driving legends.

Excellent education opportunities and quality healthcare support all the rest of our superlatives. It’s no wonder our population has increased more than 28 percent since 2000.
